Taiaha

Combat staff
The taiaha is a long, slender hand weapon usually made from native hardwood or in some instances whalebone. The point is carved to represent the human tongue (arero), above which is the forehead, eyes and upper lip, followed traditionally by a sheath of feathers and dog hair (awe). The end of the taiaha has a flat smooth blade (rau) usually about five to seven centimetres wide, which is the main striking blade.
