During the land wars of the 1860’s the New Zealand government and colonial troops were issued with the Three Band Enfield Rifle. This percussion weapon replaced the Brown Bess Musket in about 1840. The Enfield Rifle was popular with government troops as well as the Māori people. Those owned by Māori were often carved and regarded as prized weapons. This example shows the intricate embellishment of the weapon.
