Te Arawa, Ngati Rangitihi, Ngati Ngararanui
Teresa has been a pouako at Te Rito (tutor at NZMACI Weaving School) since 1989 and was inspired to take up the art of weaving as a child with the support of her whanau. She learnt and watched the likes of her nan, Merepeka Naira King, Noelene Matenga and the late Emily Schuster (QSM, OBE) as they demonstrated the mastery involved with the weaving profession.
“Emily pushed my boundaries as a weaver - piu piu is now my forte - and that came about as I asked her to mark the easiest poutama pattern. She made the finest, most complex pattern, involving small markings and little cuts of fine detail, which is now what I love in weaving.”
Teresa loves experimenting with natural and commercial dye colours. She has her own natural supply created mainly from Manuka, Toot or Tawhero leaves.
“Working under Emily and seeing her passion and love for raranga (weaving) and people has installed those qualities in me - I have a need to pass the skill on and share it with people.”
