Kawana Waititi

Te Whānau-a-Apanui

Raised in Whangaparaoa, on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Kawana enjoys his role as a pouako - whakairo (wood carving tutor), contributing to the development of the next generation of carvers, to ensure the art form is passed down for the benefit of future generations. For Kawana, the most important thing about whakairo (carving) is the kōrero (narrative) and history behind each carving. His iwi origins hail back to Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, of which he was the subject of an iwi-tono (high-level tribal agreement), with a formal request made to NZMACI to accept Kawana’s enrolment into the Te Wananga Whakairo (wood carving school). “I was quite lucky to have been selected, and being an iwi tono is a huge responsibility.”
