Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki, Rongowhakaata, Ngati Hine Hika, Irish
Hectorina joined Te Rito as a pouako (tutor) in 2005, enabling her to pass on the skills and knowledge of whāriki (intricate mats) and weaving, as they were handed on to her.
Hectorina says her mahi (work) at Te Rito is her way of giving back to Te Arawa (local tribe), acknowledging the tutors that taught her the legacy of weaving. Now she enjoys sharing and passing on what she knows with students. She also likes the opportunity to assist roopū in their own ancestral areas when applications are made for programmes to be delivered to iwi (tribes) that require assistance and expertise.
“How often do you have a job where you get to do what you love and each day is different?” she says.
