Rangitāne, Te Arawa
Grant is a pouako - Te Wānanga Whakairo Rākau o Aotearoa (Wood Carving tutor). He is the first ever NZMACI Whakairo (wood carving) School of Excellence graduate because of his high quality work, enabling him to produce high end gallery quality pieces and assist with projects at NZMACI.
Grant says the NZMACI pieces in the Ahua Māori Art Gallery are unique, standing out because they have a strong traditional base, connected to where Māori come from, holding a high standard of value and quality that the school’s legacy has left behind.
“As a tutor I enjoy watching students progress - I have some students who never touched a chisel in their life, so I teach everything from how to sharpen a chisel through to carving, it’s really fulfilling.”
